5The One
By catalyst
Before I start talking about the Zune I have to say that I've had several mp3 players in the past, from flash-based to HD-based. My newest one is this 8GB Zune. I got my Zune about a week ago, after getting rid of my 3G 8GB Nano, that I was not happy with. So this is why I'm more satisfied with the Zune vs. the Nano...Hardware-Shape is easier to hold and use than WS Nano-LCD is glass, more durable and sharper than plastic on Nano-Zune Touch Pad is more responsive and precise vs. click wheel-Wireless sharing/syncing option-Built-in FM Tuner-Better sound quality even without EQ...I just hated how bad the Nano sounds even with Shure headphonesSoftware-Very simple and easy-Asthetically better than iTunesUser Interface-No Coverflow but interface is more organized and intuitive-Customizable background, not an option on Nano-Easier to readI have not tested the battery life but it's rated close to the Nano so I'll live with whatever it really is. One thing I haven't checked on but someone else wrote about was the Zune not being a UMS Device when plugged in. Hopefully that's something Microsoft can/will change so that you can store other files on it. Overall, I'm must more satisfied with this player than the Nano.

5Zune- bye, bye Zen and Windows Media too
By R. L. Lewis
I have a couple of Zen MP3 players that have worked well for me for a couple of years now, but both have begun to have problems and I decided to take a chance on the new V2 Zune. It was a good decision. This is a great product. All that comes in the box is the Zune, a sync cord, earphones, and brief documentation. You need to go online and download the Zune software to a PC and then hook up the player before you can get it to do anything. This doesn't take too long and the Zune will provide you with some sample content to try out as part of this process. The Zune sounds great, with plenty of volume and a decent set of earphones. The click wheel is intuitive and masterable in just a few minutes use.As nice as the Zune is, a pleasant surprise is the Zune software. This is really more than just a tool to sync your tunes with your Zune. It is an attractive, intuitive, easy to use full fledged media player as well. It can easily replace Windows Media Player and is better looking than any other offering out there- Apple included.

5This is a great device
By Arnold Larson
This is my first mp3 player. I'd always thought I might like a small device that could be used while exercising, but I've hesitated to buy one because I wasn't sure how much I'd actually use it. The Zune feature that pushed me over the edge is the FM radio, which made the device too attractive not to try out. I'm extremely happy that I made the plunge and bought the Zune. I now take it everywhere and listen to music or the radio at work, on the bus, at the gym, everywhere. It has easily surpassed my bar of usefulness and utility. I'm not a big gadget person and I don't like the time and energy it takes to figure out how to use a new program or game, but the Zune user experience has been everything that I could have hoped for. The controls are simple and a pleasure to use. Right out of the box I was able to get it figured out and working. This is a great device.

5Audio Problem Solved
By Christy
Sony has solved the typical flat screen audio problems with their KDL40EX620 model. We bought another 40" flat screen TV a couple of weeks ago and had to return it because of the very poor sound quality. After a lot of internet research I came across this Sony model that indicated they had improved the audio. They were not exagerating! The sound quality is crisp, clear and great in every way. If you are shopping for a 40" flat screen TV be sure and check this one out!

5My New Sony TV
By JD808
I just got my new 55" Bravia EX620, and wow what a difference from my Samsung. First the screen is so thin, and the picture goes to the edge of the cabinet. The picture is a huge improvement, so clear you would swear you could touch what you are viewing. I wasn't sold on the whole LED picture thing but wow what a great picture. One of the things that just drove me "Mad" about the Samsung was the long wait time for the screen to turn on. The Samsung was so bad that my son broke the button on the TV, not knowing if he turned the TV on or not. With the Sony it turns on in a flash, NO WAITING. For my family this was a great investment. I have small kids and they are always leaving the TV on. This TV senses if anyone is in the room and shuts itself off, very cool. I also like how the TV will sense the lighting in the room and automatically adjust the picture to suite the lighting conditions.I also have a Sony BlueRay theater SystemSony BDV-E780W Blu-Ray Disc Player Home Entertainment System (Black). I read many bad reviews about the sound not being good on the TV itself, but I found the quality to be ok. When I want to get the full "Movie" experience I use my BlueRay System. No sound issues there. Because systems are both Sony they sync together and work together. I really like that. One of the neat things about this TV that I just discovered is you can download a free Iphone App and control the TV right from your phone. If your house is like mine, you are always searching for the romote. I usually have my phone handy so I can adjust the volume, or turn the channel without wasting time looking for the lost remote. If you want to take advantage of Iphone App you will need to purchase the Sony UWA-BR100Sony USB Wi-Fi Adapter. The adapter is overpriced but it works well, and I look at it like this. Yes it is overpriced (79.99) for what it is, but it allows me to access the on-line content from Netflix and Youtube etc.......... For me having my phone control both the TV and the BlueRay player was what I was looking for, and you need the UWA-BR100 to do that.If you are looking for a great picture this is the one for you. If you want the "Movie" experience, pick up the BlueRay theater System. If you do you will feel like you are part of the action. Now every night is movie night. Popcorn anyone??

4Super picture
By RW
Picture quality is excellent, but I have had a few issues with garbled/distorted sound & with sound and picture (lip movement and voice) not in sync. This has happened 2-3 times in the last month, and seems to only happen when watching streaming video from the internet. Cycling the power resolves the issues. Hopefully Sony is working on a patch.....Main reason for selecting this model was that it would fit into the space available. All other brands/models would only allow up to a 37". While I didn't think streaming video was a feature I would use, I watch this more than Dish. The built in speakers provide good sound quality (tone, volume), relative to speaker size, and the 14' x 18' room size.

5This is a great TV
By D_deU
I spent months researching for a replacement TV in the master bedroom and finally settled on the Sony KDL32EX523. Set up was a snap - and I did it twice as I did not have a DVR in my bedroom - so I originally connected the TV directly to my Comcast cable (no box or DTA) and it was able to grab all my channels (I do not subscribe to premium services like HBO). A few days later, I added the DVR and was channel surfing in no time. (Well - actually had issues with Comcast to get their own DVR to receive their own signals, so a 1 star rating for Comcast - dang near switched to Direct TV during that process.) Adding the Sony to my wireless network was as simple as entering my network password into the TV (this model Sony has built in wireless - no need for external USB device), just like adding a computer - join the network it found, type in the password, and boom - connected. Initializing the TV to work with my Netflix account was just as simple - I logged into my Netflix account with my laptop - input the code from the TV - and boom - the TV blinked and was instantly added to Netflix. This Sony streams Netflix content better than my TIVO DVR in the other room which is right next to my wireless hub. Picture quality is great - no issues with viewing angle, no high pitched power supply sounds. I do not want to sound like a Sony commercial, but for my use, this is one great TV.

4Loaded with features... with room for improvement
By Dane A. Kantner
Overall this is a very nice TV. It's very thin. One of the bigger draws for me was the built in Internet Apps. I had actually returned a Vizio where nothing was working at all (Pandora literally crashed the TV) and got this. This is much better. I've tested a few other Internet App tvs and the speed of this Sony one is probably the fastest I've seen as far as menu navigation goes. And the menu is also well laid out. For some people it might almost be too many features. The Pandora app works well. There's lots of room for improvement in how it is actually designed (there are color codes on the menu, and they only associate one with a feature--skip--why not have one associated with thumbs up, thumbs down, etc). No good visual effects. But it works for what it needs to--playing music. The Qriocity video stuff doesn't work at all. I've never seen anything played through it, or even a choice of items to play. I don't know what the deal is, but my understanding is that Sony has been hacked recently and has completely shut the service down for now. It may as well not be there. The Amazon streaming on demand works REALLY well and is high quality. If you're an Amazon Prime member there is a fairly extensive selection of titles that become free when you authenticate with your Prime account. (The entire series of Inspector Gadget!)Netflix streaming was very high quality, but would constantly stop to buffer. It doesn't buffer enough of the content. It will "detect" network speed as you start anything up, but obviously this detection isn't very conservative or it would downgrade my quality in favor of better playback. As it's set up now, it's unusable. You can also download software onto your computer--PC, Mac, Linux, whatever--that will let you stream video, pictures, movies, etc off of the computer and right onto your TV. Google for DLNA software and there are any number of options, many free. Windows 7 has this built into Windows Media Player but there are plenty of other open source and paid apps that may offer more features than what Microsoft's built-in software does. It's a pretty cool feature though. The TV is aesthetically pleasing. I would say Sony has other TVs in the Bravia line that I like more, but I like this one too. And it's solid, well built. The form factor is thin. However, it's so thin that all of the ports come out back at a right angle, there is no bevel where they go in parallel to the back of the TV. Why is this an issue? If you mount the TV on a wall you may find that your cables themselves will prohibit you from using a wall mount that's slim. I have a new LG LED TV and what they do to get around this issue is use a proprietary dongle for the cables, you hook up a tiny dongle into the port instead, then that hangs down and you hook the cables into said dongle. No issue with mounting it very close to the wall when you have this. With this Sony, you may have to use a tilted wall mount to give you the clearance you need, or a wall mount that leaves a few inches of room between TV and wall. Or I guess you could buy a more expensive 45 degree HDMI cable and then it would probably work with just about any wall mount. The TV has Skype built in, but you need to buy the Skype camera/mic from Sony for another $130-150 for that to work. Out of curiosity I hooked up a Logitech USB webcam up to the TV to see if it recognized it and you could Skype with that, it didn't work. Not shocking, but good to know.I'm glad Sony has finally abandoned forcing their Memory Stick down our throats by integrating it into all of their products--no memory stick port on this TV. There are USB ports you can use a standard USB media reader to use.The TV does split screen, and does it fairly well. I can watch my HD cable box and HD antenna simultaneously (or HD cable and computer that's hooked up simultaneously, etc); I occasionally have gotten a "feature not supported" when trying to tune the channel and I can't figure out what I did out of order. Split screen is a feature that some other manufacturers seem to be removing, the aforementioned LG LED I bought doesn't have it...so don't take it for granted! It only has one component input... so at the moment I have no DVD player hooked up, it's basically going to force me to upgrade to a Blu-Ray with HDMI. The industry trend seems to be reducing the number of component inputs to 1 and increasing the number of HDMI inputs. The remote is decent. I used to really dislike Sony remotes, but this one is workable. The buttons are well laid out, well sized. It has buttons for Netflix and Qriocity, but no Pandora and no way to reprogram any buttons. It's not a "universal" remote, you can't program your stereo. I think the primary reason for this is the TV itself has built in "synch" capabilities to control other Sony devices such as your Sony stereo, etc., so of course if you have a full Sony line you're good but if not you'll need another remote. The TV has a feature called "control for HDMI" (which is branded as "Bravia Sync") which will send a control signal to a device through the HDMI. For the most part this only will function with Sony devices but I don't think it's necessarily closed to other devices, they just don't support it. So for example if you have a Blu-Ray hooked up via HDMI it could pause/start/play/etc your DVD through your TV's controls. It would be nice if my Comcast cable box was controllable by this, but I have a feeling I'll be canceling Comcast before they ever support this feature. The TV has a built in guide that populates over the air station information if you have a digital antenna hooked up. It works. I didn't have to configure it for my location, it just worked. It identified the stations, and filled in the guide data. It's nice to have a really functional guide for antenna stations as well as my cable box.One of the coolest features of this TV is its energy saving mode... The TV has a built in "Presence Sensor" that detects when you're not in the room for awhile and will then turn off the screen, and when you come back it turns the screen back on. It works well, and is on by default. Will this be the next horizon in American laziness though, never turning off the TV and just relying on this feature? Who knows. :)

4Good and could have been great
By M. Cohen
This TV is very good and could have been great if it were not for the crappy internet experience. The form factor itself is quite nice; very thin, light and sturdy, with a small bezel. It sets up very quickly and easily. The picture in HD is stunning: beautiful color, very sharp with very black blacks. However SD pictures are frequently fuzzy and a bit washed out which makes watching SD a drag. My 3 year old 32 inch Sony does SD much better than this one. The viewing angle is just ok. Looking straight on, the TV looks great. As you move to the side the pictures degrades quickly. At first I thought that the sound was below average. After tweaking the settings it now sounds quite good. If you are and audiophile you will however need an amp with separate speakers. I have not had a problem with the 60 hz refresh rate. I suppose it might be somewhat of a problem if I watched more sports. It is the internet interface which is the weakness of this TV. I have the 40EX523 with built in Wi-fi. No need for a separate dongle on this one. Loading times for most of the internet programs are quite slow - much slower than my beloved Roku box. Netflix interface is very poor. You can't search and it's even hard to see the titles of many of the movies on the screen because they are so small. The Sony Netflix picture is much worse than Netflix on the Roku box. Colors on the Sony Netflix are a bit washed out and the picture is not crisp. The Sony picture on both Hulu and Amazon seem almost as good as the Roku. Again the interface for both Hulu and Amazon is far worse than that of the Roku. Crackle is not even worth using. It takes forever to load, then has to keep re-loading despite fast internet download speeds. It's almost impossible to get back to where you left off on a movie. It operates so poorly that I am amazed that Sony includes it in the first place. They should make it work well or get rid of it. I would recommend buying this TV without internet connectivity (40EX520) and don't bother with the severely overpriced internet dongle. Do yourself a favor and buy a Roku box for $79 and use that for the streaming of TV shows and movies. It is far superior to anything that Sony has to offer on this TV. Sony engineers should study the Roku box and interface and use what they learn to improve this rather pathetic internet offering. Other than the internet, this really is a very good, satisfying TV.

5A perfect purchase
By E. T. Hildebrand
[...]Amazon tracking indicated it would take 2 weeks to arrive. CEVA tracking listed it at two days earlier. I received the call for delivery in less than a week - and this included the holiday period!CEVA showed up with it yesterday. The heavy cardboard box had an 18" gash/tear in it and my heart sank. They removed the box and I noticed the screen was supported about 8" from the cardboard and there were no signs that whatever caused the gash had touched anything. We quickly plugged it into the wall and ran it thru some of the built-in menus. Relief - everything worked fine. With the 30-day return guarantee there was nothing more to worry about. The previous day Amazon had delivered a new Onkyo receiver to replace my older Yamaha. I had already disconnected the Yamaha and wired all the components and speakers to this new receiver (to take advantage of its HDMI capabilities). It now only took a couple hours to make the final connections with the receiver, cable sysem, over-the-air antenna, HTPC and network.Every single system worked perfectly, even though it sometimes took a few minutes to discover the correct input settings on each device to get everything communicating. The biggest surprise was the quality of the picture. After reading everything I could find on various forums I expected to have some tweaking to do before obtaining the best images. While critically inspecting the imagery for each type of input I could not see a need to adjust anything! Just for experimentation I did make a few selections of alternate settings, but always wound up returning to the original. I'll likely use an Avia program to verify adjustments later, but can't imagine any improvement. The "halo effect" feature on the upper and lower bezel was obvious (albeit faint) to see, but it was not distracting. In fact, if there were a switch available to turn it on and off, I'd still leave it on - it's neat! The red bezel highlighting (the TOC) is so subtle that it is nearly invisible. If I didn't know it was there I'd likely not have even noticed it. Perhaps it would be more visible in a room with bright daylighting?Another neat feature is the touch sensitive controls on the lower right bezel. They are invisible until you touch the area, causing them to temporarily sequentially illuminate. I haven't fully explored this feature yet.Another nice feature was discovering that I could hook up the computer to HDMI connection #2 and play computer games without any special adjustments. There was no lag or any problem except that I'll need to upgrade the computer's video card in order to take the display all the way up to its full resolution. Nevertheless, the Samsung must have been upscaling the image since it was extremely sharp. (Same thing with the 480i DVDs we played on it - very sharp). When not in use we intend to leave the computer hooked up so the Samsung will continuously display it's screensaver which cross-fades family photos like a huge digital picture frame. The Samsung has a TOShttp://amzn.com/dp/B001418WF4/?tag={komponelektr-20} out connection which I connected to the receiver. This vastly simplifies audio connections since all audio sent to the TV can be amplified from a single connection to the receiver. If you can connect everything via HDMI there will be significantly fewer wires and a much more simplified operation. The only thing I would have preferred is if the base would swivel. I understand the 650 models swivel, can't imagine why Samsung wouldn't include that feature here. We're very happy with this purchase.EDIT- 6-18-08After nearly 3 weeks of use we are even more impressed with this TV.I have upgraded the video card on the attached computer so that it can now attain full 1080p resolution, only to find the text too small to be readable at a normal viewing distance of about 12 feet with my 60-yr-old eyes. Backing off the resolution makes the text large enough to read while retaining its razor-sharpness.The attached computer is connected with a wireless hub to my home network, allowing it to stream pictures, music, or movies from any of the computers. The TV must be upconverting the movies to 1080p because they are displayed more clearly than when sent to a regular computer monitor. The hub also provides a patch cable to the TVs' network port, which allows it to run all the InfoLink connection functions (weather, news, stocks) without the need to even configure that connection. We added a PS3 a week ago to view blu-ray movies. What an incredible picture! Even though we are using inexpensive $3 HDMI cables, there was no flickering or other problem as reported on another Amazon review. My son tested out his new Metal Gear PS3 game and was impressed with the image and game play. We used the default settings and did not even switch to "game" mode. We've now had time to run THX and TVBlink video calibration tests and were not surprised to find that all the default settings were already set to the optimum values for our personal tastes. The set is now mounted on one of those entertainment center "stalks" which allows it to be easily rotated (for easier access to the rear connections). This mounting has taken care of the only complaint we had about this set - its' lack of a swivel base.Edit - 7-16-08After 6 weeks of use I must say that this has proven to be one awesome piece of electronics. I simply cannot believe how great this set has performed. The color and details have greatly exceeded my highest expectations. We have begun replaying our old DVD library because the upscaling capabilities built into this set appears to make them very comparable to the Blu-Ray movies we've viewed. It's like seeing a new movie! It is quite a kick to be using the computer while watching the nightly news in HD via the PIP function.A lot of people have calibrated their sets using the published settings on AVSforum.com. We tested all of those settings and found that they each resulted in a darker picture that has lost details in shadowy areas and the colors are dull, without the "pop" of the factory settings. Keep in mind that our entertainment area is in a dark, windowless room which should make viewing dimmer features easier. We tried compensating the calibration with various picture adjustments but were unable to attain comparable performance. After a week of trying to perceive any improvements we reverted our settings back to the original, tweaked, factory settings.Several people have made similar observations, leading us to a conclusion that either there is a wide discrepancy between personal preferences and/or each of these sets have varying image displays. We have no doubt that many people do see improved performance after calibrating their sets - but before you spend a lot of money on professional calibration try the AVSforum settings first to verify if you see any improvement. The only complaint we have is that we've now been spoiled by what this set can do. We picked up a new Samsung T260HD computer monitor (which also includes an HDTV tuner). This is a 26" monitor that has a similar TOC bezel to match the LN52A750. You can read our review here on Amazon - in a nutshell, we are disappointed with it's performance.

4Better processing than the a650 line - perfect for gaming
By Gadgety
I've been agonizing over an HDTV purchase for months. My 32" 480p Samsung CRT just wasn't doing it for me anymore. It was time to delve into HD now that it has been around for awhile with major tech innovations (1080p, 120hz, and more). I feel as though it will be many years before a *significant* new HD technology comes along. Here is a list of what I've been agonizing over (and probably you too) and why I made the decision for the 750.1. LNxxa750 vs LNxxa650I spent some time drooling over the LN52a650 until I came across LN52a750. I searched and searched to see if there was a performance difference between the two sets. I finally found someone with some knowledge and indeed the 750's use a different (more powerful) internal processor than the a650's. For how incredibly small the price difference is between the 650 and 750 I'm surprised people still shop the 650. Not to mention the regal-looking bezel on the 750, the woofer for those without a home theater system, and some other minor goodies. Bottom line, if you're flip-flopping between the two - stop. Just buy 750.2. What size? 52, 46, or even 40?Of course I wanted the largest size I could get. HD is a whole new ball game, and even a 52" model is not as big as it sounds. In fact after having this for a couple weeks now I am beyond relieved I didn't buy a smaller size. (I typically sit about 7 feet from the screen.). Please take my word on this. You will never regret buying too big. Unless you're in a tiny dorm room, the 52" will not overpower you. If you buy a smaller size just be warned you will be longing for the 52 before too long.3. Samsung or Sony 41 series?I went to 3 different big box stores to compare side by side. The picture on the 750 just blows away anything else in these stores. It's amazing how two sets with similar specs can have such different displays. The gloss finish just has the colors and contrast jumping off the screen. Sony makes solid products in general, but so does Samsung. It took only a matter of seconds to realize that the Sony 41 series has a boring picture compared to the 750.4. Plasma or LCD?With the glossy screen and various black adjustments in the menu, you're getting the best of both worlds with the 750. It has contrast like that of a higher end plasma, but also performs beautifully in a well lit room. Plasmas are just plain dim and dull. With how bright and vivid the 750's screen is, I have not had any issues with reflections. If you look at the models offered by most companies, it's clear that plasma is dying just as DLP is.5. The "halo effect"Non-existant. I've watched HD cable, games, and blu-rays in a pitch black room and cannot see the supposed halo that some people are whining about. In fact, I'm almost disappointed because I wanted to see what the hubbub was all about. Apparently Samsung has eliminated this.6. Amazon or a partner seller?Local big box stores sell this unit for (including tax) anywhere from $500 - $800+ more. Insane. I knew I'd be ordering it from Amazon. But sometimes the partner sellers are cheaper...what to do. It just so happened that the day I ordered it Amazon had the lowest price. But had they not, I still would have paid the extra small price difference to get it from Amazon. I have no experience with the partner sellers but felt I'd have more recourse with Amazon if a problem occurred.7. Gaming performanceI also bought a PS3 and Xbox 360 at the same time. Both are stunning, and nope, no input lag on either system using very inexpensive HDMI 1.3 cables. (However, I've read of people's feedback on the a650 where they have experienced lag. This is where the superior processor of the 750 comes in). I've played fast-paced shooters, racing, and adventure games with no lag issues. I may have had a minor lag issue with SOF on the 360 but that could just be the game. Games on the 52a750 will have you hypnotized, especially if it's your first foray into HD.8. SoundCould care less. I'm using a home theater system, but with the 750's woofer I'm sure the sound is good/great for a flat panel unit.9. Light and glare from the glossy finishHas not been an issue for me. At all.10. Final thoughtsComcast HD (via Motorola box), PS3 Blu-Ray, PS3 games, Xbox 360 games all look incredible. I sometimes watch content that I'd otherwise be bored with just because of the gorgeous picture. Plasma has nothing on the a750 and gaming is lag-free via HDMI. Buy this TV and your friends (especially those owning plasmas) will be envious if not outright jealous.

3Screen Frame Glass Concerns
By H. Miller
I was bouyed by what others have written in their reviews as well as my own experience as to what I saw in the stores when deciding what TV to buy.So when I received this model TV I was anticpating an amazing experience with my first High Definition television. At first I was blown away by the picture. But then, when I started to watch a movie at night when the room was dark, I noticed that the clear beveled edge glass of the frame was reflecting light back at me and it was very distracting.I found that if I shifted myself higher in my seat by as little as a few inches, the reflection at the top disappeared. But I still saw the reflection on the sides. But do I have to sit at a perfect angle and location in the room to fully enjoy a not so cheap TV?I called Samsung technical support and the person I spoke to said that yes, they were aware of this problem but that it was not a large enough concern to them to change the design to correct. They recommended that I consider exchanging the 750 for the 650 series whose only difference was a few features as the 650 does not have this design flaw.So while the picture is fantastic, I can hardly rate this TV very highly when I have to put black tape around the glass frame to hide the reflections.

5A truly exceptional plasma television
By Joshua Pearl
I've owned this for 3 days now, and wanted to wait until I fully tested it to write a review. After seeing how it performs with videogames, blu-ray movies and basic cable, I feel I know the television enough to offer my thoughts.Picture quality: Incredible. Blacks are as deep as the bezel surrounding the TV. Colors are bold - everything you'd expect from a top of the line plasma. I own a 62" DLP, a 26" LCD, a 50" panasonic 720p plasma and this plasma, and the plasmas are the only sets that really "pop." This model is head and shoulders above even the 50" 3-year-old model I own.Video game play: There's a game mode, which bumps up the brightness and sharpness. It's great for PS3 games. I've played Demon's Souls and Wolfenstein on it so far, and both look amazing. The system touts "1080 lines of moving picture resolution" to help with motion blur. Honestly, I never felt plasmas had an issue with motion blur to begin with, so I'm not sure how much of a difference this feature is making, but from what I understand in doing research it helps to have it.Cable: HD looks good - even the reds aren't blown out. Basic cable is standard definition - a thing on it's way out anyway, lol.Aesthetics/connections: The TV is very sharp looking, and the anti-glare feature on the S model (as opposed to the U model) actually makes a difference. I rolled my eyes when I read the feature, but I'm watching it in the daytime in a well-lit room and the glare is really minimal. The only minor dissapointment is no VGA connection, but I'll figure out a way around that. Was going to use VGA to hook up my 360 (since I'm using computer speakers for audio at the moment), but will go the component route now. By the way, a TON of controls and an HDMI input are on the side of the tv, making it very easy to get to.Burn-in/image retention/ghosting: Haven't experienced any signs of even ghosting yet. Had my game on pause for a few minutes a couple times to test it.Audio: Haven't tested the TV's speakers, just using an external set of logitech speakers with subwoofer at the moment.Overall: For the price, I highly recommend the set. Like I said, I own 4 televisions of 3 different technologies and this one shows off the best picture. I have a collection of almost 800 blu-rays, and stay up to date on all the high-def news, etc... I do extensive research before purchasing a product, and actually went into this thinking I was going to give in and get an LED. I don't want to get into an LED vs. Plasma thing here, but the LED's are simply LCD with different lighting, and it brings all the inherent LCD problems with it. They make catch your eye in the store, but once you get home and get into your environment, it's a different story. That said, this plasma in game mode gets the picture as close to LED as I've seen but with much better blacks.Update 5/2/10: Just thought I'd add to this that I've had a videogame on pause for more than an hour a few times, and while I wouldn't make a habit out of it, there hasn't even been a hint of ghosting and certainly no issue with burn-in. Even so, the TV seems to have an auto shut-off function after 5 minutes or so of complete inactivity. There will be a message prompting you that it will shut off in 3 minutes and it counts down from there.

5Superb - Settled on this after a lot of research - DOES work with Mac and PC
By P. Cook
This TV really is something else.I did research for months before finally settling on this. I was strongly considering the Panasonic G20 and G25 TV's, the 2010 steps up from the S2 series (which is a 2010 model as well, to be clear), but ultimately picked the S2, here's why:First, only the G25 and S2 series have a 42" model (rumors of a 42" of the G20, but as of this review they were not available). Anything larger than 42" wouldn't fit properly in my space, so that knocked out the otherwise attractive G20 for me.Let's talk about what features it doesn't have compared to the bigger brothers: First, it lacks the Panasonic 'Looks superb. The G25 series has the Panasonic "Infinite Black Panel" - the S2 does not, but I swear after watching the G25 in store and then watching a properly calibrated S2 at home, the average consumer cannot tell a difference. The blacks on this TV are very black, and merge well. The contrast ration on this is 2mil:1 vs the G25 5mil:1 if you want to know the numbers. The other major features that this doesn't have over the G25 are the Viera Cast (youtube, netflix, twitter, etc) online features (there is no internet connection of any sort on the S2), and it also lacks the THX mode that the G20 and G25 have. Let me tell you why I'm not missing these, even as a filmmaker who might otherwise seriously consider the THX mode.First, while the Viera Cast features sound nice and are convenient, they're essentially negating what my PlayStation 3 can already do in terms of online access. All I mean to say here is, if you're willing to use an external device (console, computer) to access these features a different way, then you can pay less and get this model. If you don't have a console or want the convenience of having these built in without another device, then set your gaze on the G25 (or a blu-ray player with the same features that the TV's have). Also, the THX mode does sound nice, but if properly calibrated, this TV looks masterful on it's own and is a true bargain for the price. In the three days I've had it, I've tried PS3 games, Blu-Ray movies, Standard DVD movies, and streamed Netflix (one of the films they stream in HD, and let me tell you, it looked like Blu-Ray) and all three have looked truly superb. No shuttered motion (thanks to the 600Hz), great color reproduction and, folks, the brightness is fine. It really is. While this TV ***WILL*** have some glare if you have it in a room with TV's in the background, when the TV is on, any minor glare/reflection from lamps (etc) in the room will immediately be overcome by the image. The sound is not masterful, but in no way is it bad. It's on the high end of "normal" from a TV, if you will. Absolutely worth listening to until you can get a sound system later, if you need or want to wait. I "want" a sound system, but it's not a priority, for what it's worth. This TV does NOT have USB ports, but again, if you have a console you shouldn't miss it. A PS3 or XBox will substitute almost any need for a USB port. The Wii looks/works fine (I have one) but overall extended use should come from one of the HD systems if you have this TV (purely because the Wii lacks HD output, is all. Not knocking it!).Some of the Picture modes are a little weak ("standard," for example), but with some adjustments or a true calibration you'll be fine. Nothing to shy away from at all. Finally, ***BURN IN WORRIERS NEED NOT WORRY***. All the 2010 Panasonic plasmas have a pixel shifting technology that helps reduce burn in. They also have a "white wash" feature that erases burn in, and although I have yet to have need for it (burn in is worse typically in the first 100 hours of a plasma) - some other reviews I've read seem to think this feature will operate well as intended, IF you even need it.My last thought is this: If you don't want to pay more for features you already have via another device, this TV is your best bet for 2010 model plasmas. For the cost of the 42" G25, I bought this TV, a Logitech Harmony One remote, an HDMI cable, a 4 year protection plan on the TV, and the Logitech device that makes the PS3 work with the Harmony One remote. All for under $1,200. That's outstanding, in my opinion.

4For the most part, a pretty good TV
By Carl M. Coleman Jr.
I got this TV because it looked like the perfect fit for a price / performance ratio. Overall I'm pleased with my purchase, although there are a few things that Panasonic can improve on. I have seen and had lots of experience with the 2009 S1 model, as well as the 2009 G10. The 2010 S2 is better than the S1 but doesn't quite have the picture quality to match the G10. Its close though. So if you can find a G10 at the same price you may want to go with the G10. The reason I didn't go with the G10 is because Panasonic has had problems with some of their TV's losing a significant amount of their black levels in previous year's models. They said that they have addressed these issues in the 2010 model lineup. So to get a few more years out of my plasma, and sacrifice a slight loss in picture quality I decided to go for the S2.Picture QualityAs far as black levels go, I have no quarrels with this TV. It has excellent black levels, and honestly I think this feature is a little over hyped in the industry. I do appreciate black levels but when TV's are this black, I much prefer color accuracy, which is where this TV has a few problems. Most colors look great and the red's specifically pop very well. Skin tones are also very accurate for the most part. But the greens don't look as good as other high end models and you can tell in a side by side comparison. Some of the HD sources I used to distinguish the picture quality of the TV are: Planet Earth, The Dark Knight (which is the best HD source that I've ever seen).Food Network (to accurately judge color), about a dozen video games, and a few other Blu-Ray movies. The fluid motion of action scenes is very good, and I couldn't really see any flaws as far as motion quality goes. The detail of the content that I viewed is pretty good, but you may notice a few flaws if you sit really close. Another complaint that I have about the picture quality is that sometimes the video processor doesn't handle older HD sources and doesn't do SD sources very well at all. SD sources, at times, look downright terrible, and the TV doesn't seem to clean up HD sources that were made four or five years ago as well as higher end models. This TV also seems to handle video games very well. There were only a few occurrences where I saw a difference in picture quality and they were minute. Overall, very good picture quality.SoundNo one is going to mistake this for a good home theater setup, but to sound is pretty good for a TV. If you're serious about your audio, then you'll definitely want to get a home theater system to compliment this TV.Features / MenusIt would have been nice to have an Ethernet port to get firmware updates, and have a few internet applications, but these apps are usually slow and I much prefer to use a set top box or gaming console. The Ethernet port is the feature that is any concern for me. As far as the menu goes, Panasonic has almost gotten it right. You'll have to go into the settings, and change a few things because the default settings are a little strange. They're also missing a few things like gamma, and an option to just turn up the brightness of the panel (not the picture). Mostly everyone will turn it on Vivid which may be a little to bright for some, but the alternative, Standard, is much to dim. It would have been nice to fine tune everything the way you like. The menus do a descent job of explaining what each setting does, which is a welcomed addition. They have also disabled some of the settings which is also a little strange. The remote is nothing special. They could have moved around a few buttons to make it easier to navigate but, I`ve seen much worse. The Viera Link feature (for me) is completely useless, and I can't imagine anyone using it very much. There is also a slot where you can put an SD card and show off photos. This is useful, but it is very slow going from image to image. It's also worth mentioning that this TV does have the ability to heat up a room.OverallThis TV does what I want it to do. It has solid picture quality, and enough features to keep me satisfied. The fact is that technology changes so fast that it doesn't make sense to spend top dollar on hardware when that hardware will be trailing edge in a year or two. So, while I would love a higher end model, I am very satisfied with my purchase. With proper calibration it's hard to see the difference between this TV and higher end models unless you sit really close, so I do recommend this TV.

1A very serious issue.
By matt
I was very impressed with the Stora's specs and performance when I first bought it. However I have discovered a serious issue with it. To setup and administrate this device you are required to use a web based administration interface hosted on a Netgear affiliated third party server on the Internet. To emphasize, this interface is not on the local Stora device. It is on a remote Internet server which you have no control over. In order to use this interface you must open several ports in your firewall which exposes your network to security risks from the Internet. Over the next few days after configuring the Stora if you watch the network traffic coming from the Stora, you will see that it will attempt to communicate with a couple different Internet servers. I would assume that they are Netgear's or the third party's servers. But why would the Stora need to "Phone Home" on such a frequent basis, or any for that matter? Worse still, if you lock down those ports after the initial setup to stop the Stora from accessing the Internet on it's own, and then reopen them to administrate the device at a later date, your login id will no longer be a valid account associated with your Stora on their remote server and you will no longer be able to change the setup on the local Stora device that you own.Suppose that does not represent a problem for how you wish to use the device. There is another aspect to consider. What will happen when Netgear end of lifes the Stora and takes down their servers? Will you be able to login to the device anymore? That is a question I can't see a positive answer for. I guess Netgear expects that the user would just dispose of the Stora and buy another of their NAS products. I know I won't.I hope that Netgear decides to fix this issue because if it were not for this issue I would have only praise for this device and for Netgear. If they don't, then I will give one of their competitors my future business, including replacing this device in the near future.

3My experiences with Stora - hardware incompatibility but solution found
By Modern Blue Argonaut
What's not to love about the Netgear Stora? On description alone, this sounds like a great product for home users to back up their computers and store their music and picture libraries. Perfect, right?Although this is marketed for the non-technical user, after my experiences, I don't thing Grandma would ever figure this one out. When I first installed the Stora I thought everything was going to work just like indicated. I had the stora set up, registered, password created, and had even added a couple of music files to test it out. Music was streaming perfectly. Then.. I tried to go online to read the owners manual and that is where the fun began. I found when the Stora was turned on that it hijacked my router and blocked Internet access from any other device in the house. Even computers that had never even accessed the Stora or had the Stora desktop applications installed were blocked as well as my squeezebox.I turned off the Stora and cleared the cookies from my computers and restarted them, and I was able to get back onto the Internet. Then I turned the Stora on and it immediately blocked Internet access. I worked for a few hours on my own trying to diagnose the problem and find a workaround. Having no luck, I contacted technical support.I found that Netgear surprisingly had 24/7 technical support, which was excellent at 2:30 am, except for the forty minutes of hold time. The first tech support specialist was a joy to work with. He was patient beyond what could be expected of saints. He went through every troubleshooting idea he could come up with. After spending two hours with me, at my suggestion he agreed I should try to assign an IP address to the Stora rather than allowing my router to auto-assign an IP address. I knew the IP address should be along the lines of 192.168.1.1xx but the tech support specialist told me to set it to 192.168.1.1, and against my better judgement, I put that in. At that point, my router decided he'd had enough and flipped out and kept flashing lights non-stop. My Internet AND Stora access were blocked. The tech support specialist set up a time for a higher level tech support specialist to call me back, and right on schedule I was contacted by Patrick. Patrick quickly ran through the notes and tried a few more things to help me, but finally ascertained that he couldn't fix the problem and suggested I either RMA it or return it to Amazon. He also understood that the Stora and the last tech support specialist made the problem worse so he tried to help me get my network working again even after we had taken the Stora off of the network. It didn't work, but I did appreciate his willingness to help. The technical support specialists we talked to never addressed the issue of a possible hardware conflict, such as my router, but I got to thinking that might be the problem. We run a home business and in a fret of worry about not being able to print out and access tomorrows business I had my husband run to Sam's Club and purchase a new router. I did a system restore on all of the computers in the house to three days prior (and made sure the Stora was not connected in any way to my network, lol). I then installed the new router and my network was resurrected. That got me to thinking.. maybe my router was not compatible with the Stora. Making a leap of faith I printed out tomorrows business and reconnected the Stora. Like magic, I did not get kicked off the Internet. The Stora was still working. I uploaded dozens of albums to the Stora and started streaming music around the house. I finally figured out that my router was incompatible with the Stora. Others on forums have complained that the Stora running blocks their http access. I would suspect that the problem lies in the router, how it assigns IP addresses, and that interacts with the Stora.I don't feel that this product was ready for prime time. I did some backups, but found they did not create what I consider to be a mirror backup. I couldn't scroll through the hierarchy of drives and files like on my Seagate replica, but instead it's the type of backup you would use to restore a system. I also found the backup on this product to be incredibly slow compared to other competing products I've used.I still like using it for streaming music and will probably add another 1TB drive to safeguard my files, but I don't know if the average person would persist through the many hours it took me to get this working correctly. My other complaint is that the PDF user manual was "included" on the setup CD, but in fact it needed to be online to read. In other words, when they say the user manual is on CD, you have to be connected to the Internet to read the manual at their web site. It's not a stand alone PDF accessible straight from the CD. That REALLY frustrated me when I was having problems. One more complaint, if the music folder is a folder within a folder it won't play. For example, if you have eight Michael Jackson albums contained within a folder called "Michael Jackson" and click "autoplay" it won't play any music. You have to manually drill down to get to the album you want. Some reviewers have reported having to open ports on their firewall. I suppose experiences will vary. I set up my Stora using a Windows 7 64-bit operating system with Windows firewall and MSSE. I never had to adjust anything to complete the setup and my network is still secured. Perhaps there are compatibility factors that cause workarounds like disabling your firewall or opening ports.I haven't yet set up the remote access free trial, but plan to give it a try once I have more loaded onto the Stora. I'll update my review and experiences after I try it out.I hope that Netgear improves the Stora software because it has a lot of potential, but in it's current state it has basic functionality, basic storage, basic backup, with remote and network access. With better firmware and software, this product could be a must-have.Pros:Inexpensive90 days free phone support3 year warranty parts & labor1TB storageRemote access for only $20 per yearAbility to add another 3.5" SATA drive and utilize RAID featureNo need to install the desktop apps on additional computers, just access it's assigned IP on your network (192.168.1.?)Can use this as a network printer server by connecting the printer through USBFile upload is very easy - just drag and dropCons:Mirror backup is not a mirror- it's just a backupIncompatibility with some routersFolder management is pretty basicSlow backupsI feel the 90 day free phone support should be longer, at least six months

4Great, Inexpensive, Energy Efficient Solution to Scalable NAS. Airport Extreme Owners Read Special Instructions Below.
By P. Colin McGraw
I used to own the HP MediaSmart Home Server and loved the idea of scalable home storage, but a (since corrected) data corruption bug had me send it back to HP. I was tempted to reinvest in the unit since the problem was corrected, but I became very aware of my home electric usage and didn't like the fact that it sucked 40W at idle 24/7. Storage appliances should be energy efficient if always-on!That's why I was intrigued by the Stora. It's a simpler, though not quite as robust solution that does exactly what I want and, as it turns out, draws about a quarter of the electricity of the MediaSmart at idle (and is documented to have a sleep mode besides). All of this, plus it's only $200, which is much less than the MediaSmart's $400-600 price tag and isn't too much more than some non-network ready external hard drives of similar size!As for my impression of the capabilities of the Stora, for me, I don't need a lot of frills in a NAS, I mainly want a lot of storage for all the iTunes video I buy and I want the ability to back it up, since I amassed about $1,000 worth of digital media that I don't want to lose.In this regard, the Stora delivers! 1 TB is a decent amount of space, and having your content automatically backed up is as simple as adding any old 1 TB drive to the second hot-swappable bay. You can add an additional disk via USB and the performance of the Stora is good enough to be the source of my iTunes library and stream video and music over my wireless network to my Apple TV/computer with no skipping. The Stora was also instantly recognized by iTunes on my computer (shared playlist) and my PS3 (video share) with no effort on my part! For my purposes I need to have the Stora be the source of my iTunes library vs. just having that shared playlist (so I can also stream video/use an Airport Express' speakers, etc.), but it's nice to know the feature works effortlessly. The Stora also offers some value-added capability that some may find compelling. It's possible to use it as a source for computer backups, including Time Machine compatibility for we Mac users, you can enable FTP access locally and/or over the internet, and if you pay for a subscription service, you have the ability to do things like have your photos automatically added to Facebook. However, since I use iPhoto to do the same thing for free, I'm not really sold on the value of such a service.I do have a few gripes with the unit, however, and they're worth considering both as part of your purchasing decision, and in case you run into the same problems I did.First, the setup program is currently incompatible with Airport Extreme routers (because of lack of UPnP?). The installer doesn't give any user feedback so it's difficult to tell what's happening, but basically it has trouble finding the Stora.Because of this quirk, I spent an hour on the phone with a not-so-helpful support rep before I ended up suggesting that we try to access the Stora by IP address to see if we can set it up that way, which, luckily, it turns out you can. For those wondering, to determine the IP address of the Stora if you have an Airport Extreme, you need to go to "Airport Utility" then select your router, click the "Wireless Clients" label to see detailed information, then lookup the Stora under DHCP clients. Once you have the IP address, you can type it into your browser and run setup on the unit.A second gripe is that authentication happens through Netgear's servers if you want to reach the administration pages of your router. This isn't a problem if you're just accessing the NAS on your local network (despite what some other reviewers have claimed), but it is an issue if you want to change the unit's settings. You have to rely on Netgear to maintain their servers indefinitely or there may be problems tweaking the units in the future.Lastly, the drives in the Stora are apparently formatted with some kind of proprietary file format... UPDATE/CORRECTION: I've been informed that the file format is simply XFS, so if your Stora fails, getting data off the drives may be complicated for non-Linux users, but not impossible. All in all, however, the Stora is a great, relatively energy-efficient home storage solution that gets the job done capably, but may require a little bit of technical knowhow for fringe situations. I'd recommend it, despite its limitations.
