3Decent Speakers, But Not Premium
By Kort
I suspected the sound quality of the Logitech Z553 speakers might be compromised when saw their design, and unfortunately my suspicions seem to be correct. If they were budget speakers I would have no complaints. But these are one of Logitech's current "Best" 2.1 speakers and I don't feel they warrant their premium price tag.Don't get me wrong. I like these speakers. They have a unique look, have solid build quality, and sturdy cables (except for the flimsy 3.5 audio cable that actually connects to the computer). They come packaged well and have good set-up instructions. Set-up is easy though I am not sure how you wall mount them. The stands adjust 90 degrees for optimal placement. If you like red wires, you'll love the Z553 speaker system, though some may want something a little more subdued. Still, the entire system has a well-designed color scheme and are attractive units if that's what you want. The control pod is pretty cool and has a nice feel as one adjusts the volume. There are ports on the sub-woofer for additional audio inputs and jacks on the pod as well. One issue I have is that there isn't a whole lot of volume. For 40 Watts I was expecting a bit more "oomph". The bass is a bit weak as well, considering the size of the sub-woofer. I've had speaker systems that put out a lot more bass in a similar form factor. I had to turn the base level up to full via the control pod and tweak my equalizer in iTunes to pump out more bass. My wife even walked by when I was listening to various music samples and said, "Is that all the bass they have?"The two main speakers don't live up to their premium label either. Yes, they have great clarity and produce a respectable sonic "stage". However, they sound a bit shrill and flat to my ears. Granted, I've been listening to higher-end speakers before this, but I still think they could perform better. They also have a very limited "sweet zone". If you are close to them and have the speakers pointed towards your ears, then you should be good. Move slightly outside of that zone and the audio quality drops noticeably. These speakers sound great either up close and focused, or from a distance. There is no middle zone.As I said, I like these speakers. They sound pretty good when you're in their optimal playing range and you have the volume (and bass) up high. Mid-range clarity is quite good. They are not what I'd consider premium 2.1 speakers though, and I think consumers can find better options for less elsewhere, thus the 3 stars (3.5 rounded down). For a less 'stylish' yet better sounding Logitech deal, consider the 200 Watt Z623 Speaker System.~Kort

5Excellent sound, wired remote a bit fiddly
By Mr. T. Anderson
If you think computer speakers in plastic cabinets are squawky and unpleasant, try these and you might revise your opinion. The sound is great, with more than enough bass thanks to the 20 watts RMS subwoofer, and smooth integration with the dual-driver satellite speakers, rated at 10 watts RMS per channel which means plenty loud enough for most listening.Considering the price, I cannot fault the sound. No, it is not quite as good nor as loud as a high-end home hi-fi that costs ten times the price or more, but within its limitations it is outstanding and I have heard worse from far more expensive kit. What you get is a powered cylindrical subwoofer with mains input and other connections on the back, two passive satellite speakers, and a wired remote which has volume and bass controls together with a headphone socket and a further input socket designed for an MP3 player, tablet or smartphone. The appearance is striking. I like the subwoofer, which stands just under 40cm high and 16cm diameter, and has a downward-firing 4-inch driver. That will be on the floor and out of the way though, and I am no so sure about the satellite speakers, which look a bit like binoculars stood on their sides. These satellite speakers must not be placed on the floor; I tried and they sounded dreadful. They are perfect sited both sides of a computer screen on your desk, or by a television on a stand, or on a table where you might be watching a video on a tablet. The wires do get a bit in the way though, since at a minimum you have a cable to your sound source, cables from the subwoofer to each speaker, and a cable to the wired remote. The cables are also bright orange, so you will not miss them! The ergonomics of the wired remote are not that great. It is a little round thing, where the top half forms a rotating on-off switch and volume control. Underneath it at the back is a small volume control for the bass alone. This is very effective, and transforms the sound from thin and reedy to deep rumbling; hopefully you can find a spot in between that is to your taste. My main complaint about the remote is that it is too easy to knock the volume accidentally, especially while adjusting the bass. I would also have preferred a wireless remote, especially as the supplied cables are not that long.Another small annoyance is that the overall gain is too little for some sound sources. I plugged in a smartphone, and even with the phone at maximum volume, the Z553 was unable to get to its own maximum volume. It was loud enough for me though. The build quality seems excellent. Each speaker has an integral stand with three rubber spikes to prevent any rocking.I doubt you will have any problem connecting up. On the back of the sub are inputs for two RCA phonos or a 3.5mm stereo jack, together with outputs for the two slave speakers, and a special connector for the wired remote. If you add in the input on the remote itself, you can connect up to three sources simultaneously, but there is no way to switch between them so unless you like a cacophony of sound, you had better turn on only one at a time.If you need better sound from your computer or TV, or small speakers to use with a tablet or smartphone, these are an excellent choice in terms of sound quality. In terms of appearance, you be the judge; I don't mind them, but I do not love them either. In terms of convenience, there are a few too many wires for my liking.Still, for me it is the sound that counts, and once they are installed on your desk with the wires tucked away as far as possible, you will soon forget any inconvenience. Recommended.

4Packs Quite a Little Punch
By Steven James
I have been using this Logitech Speaker System with my small TV in my bedroom. While it provides a solid sound system for my small bedroom, I couldn't see this working effectively in a room much bigger than a standard bedroom. It allows my TV to become much louder and it almost provides a "surround sound" effect. It provides quality high and low tones, with a solid bass background. The Logitech Speaker System would probably be most effective as a computer speaker set-up. However, with my small TV it is more than sufficient, providing a much better sound than the basic speaker that comes standard with my TV. It is small and unobtrusive, taking up minimal space in my bedroom. If you're looking for a system to power up your big screen TV with movie quality this is not the one for you. But if you have a small television or computer in a smaller room you will be happy with this speaker system.
