By Bryan Balak
(Updated Review)After what I am sure was some type of firmware or hardware failure, my replacement DIR-857 is up and running flawlessly. I'll give it five stars when the firmware is working better.I upgraded to Firmware version 1.01 (released about 2 days before this review update) before setting up the router. The speed is incredible, but there are still some issues, which I'm sure will be addressed with future firmware updates:1) The SD and USB port streams movies flawlessly. I wasn't able to get a USB hard drive (Western Digital) to work, but my 16 GB USB stick worked very well. I was able to access the USB stick remotely through the internet (non-LAN connection) using the Admin account. I was unsuccessful in creating another user account, so for now, the admin account must be used to log into the "YourIP:8181" port. My Windows 7 machine could not map the USB Drive or SD Card to upload any files. I had to do it a single file at a time through the http connection - Or just load it and then plug it into the router.2) A reboot is needed after EVERY CHANGE to the firmware. You can make multiple changes, and then reboot, but if you get logged out automatically due to a "time out", all your changes are lost. I recommend making changes on each page, and then rebooting - Especially when you're reserving IP addresses for devices on your network.I'm in the process of setting up QOS for various applications and have managed to get IP addressed reserved for all my devices. I'll update more as I play with it. Overall, very satisfied.(Original Review)I really wanted this router to work, but it falls flat on it's face. It was going to replace my D-Link DIR-655, but it can't even hold an IP address from Verizon's FiOS service for 10 minutes before it shuts show, turns off, or becomes completely unresponsive. I spent about 4 hours trying to get some kind of life out of this router before I gave up and went back to the DIR-655. 95% of the time when I plugged it in, I just got an orange power light, or nothing at all. I don't see what the point of a power button on the back is, when it doesn't even seem to work. The reset button also seems to be pointless, as it never restarted the router or returned it to it's default settings. I plan to return it for another to see if maybe I just got a dud, as I really prefer D-Link's firmware to the one on the Netgear WNDR4500 - which is poorly laid out and confusing.

I had initially purchased the DIR-857 right at launch to replace my aging DGL-4500 gaming router. The DGL-4500 is a champ but the wireless range is awful for my 3600 sq ft home, so I decided to give the new top tier dlink router a try. Installation was somewhat clunky due to known issues, but a firmware update resolved the majority of the problems. After 24 hours, I was impressed with the wired and wireless speeds, functionality and of course, incredible wireless range. Sadly, a constant issue came up that couldn't be resolved - both wired and wireless devices would intermittently lose connection for a matter of minutes.Unfortunately, my family started complaining that they couldn't get online right away, that it would take 15 minutes before they had a connection. I shrugged it off as user error at first as I extensively use my PC for work and would have noticed if their was a connection drop (my VPN would have died and alerted me). Then when browsing mail from my iPhone late at night, I was getting no internet access. I was connected to the network, there was just no internet access. This happened again and again and I soon found it was not only intermittent, but also random - it wouldn't affect all devices at once, just some. This made it quite clear that it was not user error and my family was indeed having issues.I had the router set up correctly, practically identical to my DGL-4500 setup. I first tried the dlink forum where they had me try all the basics such as reserving DHCP for listed devices and practically disable every feature to find the culprit. I tried everything and it got to the point where they wanted me to try asking my neighbors if I could hook my router up to their setup for 24 to 48 hours to see if they had the issue. This was the end of the line for me as I felt the request was completely unacceptable given the price tag of the router. In the end the forum blamed the issue on my modem as it doubles as both a cable and phone modem, despite the fact I had no issues with previous dlink routers and my ISP noted the accusation was absurd.Given the headache and price tag, I opted to return the router for a refund until dlink fixed the issue with a firmware update. The issues certainly could have been due to a defective unit, so I've decided to give the router a shot again. The awful wireless range with my DGL-4500 has become an annoyance again, so I've purchased the DIR-857 again in hopes everything goes smoothly. I will update this review with my final findings once the router is up and running.UPDATE:Got the new unit and was up and running in a matter of minutes. Everything was solid for 24 hours; absolutely no issues. Then, unfortunately, the connection issues started again. I've done numerous checking and it's the same issue - the DHCP server fails to maintain or assign IP's properly. I've reserved my mac address and IP using the reservation options, and even tried using static IPs. Despite all efforts to fix the issue, I'm stuck rebooting the router 2-3 times daily to resolve the issue. I'm debating calling support, but at this time I strongly caution buyers to stay far away from this unit.

By Joe
I purchased this router to replase a DIR-601. My old router worked wonderfully; however, the range was not as great after I moved office location. I have always had a great user experience with D-Link products; therefore, I chose this router over the new Netgear R6300 even though the later has the new 802.11ac draft technology. I am not a fan of Netgear after having one that always dropped the signal. A couple of friends also currently use Netgear routers and they have to reboot it daily (that was my experience for a hole month and, thus, my switch to D-Link which I never had to reboot it since installation). After finding out that D-link had this new router and after reading many reviews on the DIR-857, it was a no brainer decision. The features that sold me on it was the guest network (which the Netgear supposely has, but it was not included in the current firmware), the 3.0 USB port to connect an external hard drive (the R6300 only has a regular port), and the size/look. The only con I see is that it cannot be hung on the wall, but for me it is not a real issue to have it on a desk or table.Setting up the internet connection was not as easy as explained in the program to install the router, but it is not difficult at all to go around it (even though the drop-down list had my ISP as an option). I checked the D-Link forum and found a post on how to solve the issue. Another way is to just call you ISP and get the DNS settings directly from them and manually enter the info and you are set to go. It is noteworthy to mention that I am not an IT guy nor I fully know how networks are set up, but can follow instructions. I just know the basics. After that issue, programing the actual network was a breeze. Setting up the external hard drive was also instant. The wireless access to the 3.0 hard drive is as fast as connecting it to the laptop directly to the USB port. I stream 3D videos and other movies to my TV from the hard drive without a glitch. The unit is nice looking and does not have many colored lights bliking like mi DIR-601. It look elegant on the desk. Also, I noticed the router does not run hot like my old router.Furthermore, range is AWESOME compared to my old DIR-601! Although it is going through many walls and floor levels, I am able to have strong signal everywhere (even outside). As soon as I arrive at my place, the tablet I always carry with me instantly picks up the wifi signal while approaching the house (before I even go in the driveway) and starts receiving e-mails and notifications. It is really impressive becuase the router is in the back room of the house.I have heavily used the router for a couple of day straight. I have only one wired item connected to it (VoIP lines), and have 13 wireless items (laptops, TV, smartphones, tablets, bluray players, printers, game consoles, etc.) runing at the same time most of the day. I only had to reboot the router one time the first day after a couple of hours of use because the internet connection dropped. I checked the D-Link forum for a solution and found one post about that. Applied the suggested setting, and the network worked even faster than before. I am running an older laptop on the network capable of only connecting as "g," but it works awesomely with this router. After that, I have not had a single problem with the DIR-857. I am VERY impressed with the speed of this router, and definitely recommend it.I upgraded to a new firmware recently released. I noticed an overall improvement in the connection speed. I am very, very glad I chose this DIR-857 router.I will update this review after the first 30 day of "router abuse." (I do not think many people put a router to use as heavy as I do). Thanks D-Link! Keep up with the awesome work providing great products!UPDATE 6/23/2012I kept having the signal and internet connection drop. I called the customer support number four times. We tried different settings to troubleshoot the router. The reps were very friendly and seemed knowledgeable. The center seemed to be in the Philippine, but everyone spoke English very well. After the fourth call, they determined that the router was defective and needed to get replaced. They asked me to call Amazon to start the process, and told me to give them the ticket number I had with D-Link in case they had questions. I processed the return through Amazon and received my replacement on the second business day. That is impressive!I installed the new router and had the same issue getting the router to connect to the internet. However, I knew what to do since it happened with the first one I got. After that, the remaining setup was a breeze. The replacement router has been working PERFECTLY: no signal drop or internet connection drop.Besides the issue with the first defective unit and the problems getting it to connect to the internet during the initial setup, this is an amazing router!!! I definitely recommend it. Thanks D-Link!***** Update *****October 7, 2012I got tired of having to plug and unplug drives to access the different media a use at home or remotely. Thus, I decided to purchase a USB 3.0 HUB Uspeed USB 3.0 Superspeed 4 Port Hub with USB 3.0 Cable and Power Adapter Backward Compatible with USB 2.0 - Matte Black to connect it directly to the DIR-857.Hoping for this experiment to work, I installed the HUB and plugged 3 drives to it (a 2TB for music, 1.5TB for data, and a 3TB for movies including 3D movies I watch on my TV). After rebooting the router, HUB, and drives I fired up my laptop. I opened the router's SharePort Plus utility and the three drives showed on the window. I was happy to see that! The next step was to see if it was going to be fast or slow. Luckily, I was able to access each drive (one at a time AND all of them at the same time - playing music, streaming video and accessing files) without a problem whatsoever!!!The transfer rate between drives and between the computer and the drives is fast. Also, streaming 3D movies to my TV works flawlessly! So, once again, AWESOME ROUTER!
