By Martin Anderson
I received this product through Amazon's vine program, which means that I received it for free in exchange for writing this review. This item is a pair of powerline ethernet adapters. It plugs into a wall outlet and has an ethernet jack. It allows you to connect any two ethernet devices using the electrical wires, instead of ethernet cables. The data is then sent over the powerlines that run through your walls. So, for example, I use it to connect my network printer, which I keep in my garage, with the rest of my computer network. I don't have an ethernet network jack in the garage, and so I plugged this box into a regular outlet and then plugged the printer into the ethernet jack on the box. I then plugged the second box into a jack in my house and plugged that into my network. Voila! Now, my printer is on my network.Although the kit includes two units, you can purchase additional units and add them to the network later. There are range limits. The further each unit is from the other, the slower the data will be transmitted. And if you're too far, you won't get data transmission at all. Netgear has a program you can download from their web-site (called the Powerline Utility) that you can run on a Windows computer and that will show you all the units that are connected to the "main" unit (the one that is connected to the computer you are running the software on) and their data transmission speed. There are a number of companies that make these devices, and almost all of them (including these) use the HomePlugAV specification for sending data over powerlines. Any unit that is HomePlugAV compliant can talk to any other HomePlugAV compliant device, and so this one will work with similar products made by Zyxel, Netgear, and Linksys, etc. Because all of these devices use exactly the same technical standards, they should all perform just about the same. The standard allows for 200 Mbps transfer, but I've never seen that in the real world, as all powerlines suffer from a certain amount of interference from flurescent lights, electric motors, AC units, etc. There are only two things that make this unit notable from its competition.First, it is the smallest powerline ethernet adaptor that I've ever seen. Traditionally, these devices have been quite large, and so it is nice to finally see a unit that is appropriately sized. Unfortunately, my testing found that this impacted the range. I have two older (larger) units from XyXEL (the 200 Mbps PLA401), and each of them provided reliable connections at a longer distance than these did.Second, it has a Gigabit ethernet port. Netgear claims that it can do up to 500Mbps, but this seems unlikely given that the HomePlugAV standard, which it follows, only allows for 200 Mbps. There does seem to be a newer standard that supports 500 Mbps, but Netgear's Powerline Utility is telling me that my current connection speed between the two units is between 103 and 129 Mbps. The HomePlug alliance did put out a new standard in January of 2012 called HomePlugAV2, which allows for gigabit data on powerlines, but nothing in Netgear's literature or web-site indicates that this device supports HomePlugAV2, and the report from Netgear's Powerline Utility (see above) shows that I'm getting about 100 Mbps.Netgear carries a number of different models of these types of devices, and their web-site lacks any real details that allow you to tell how they are different. My experience is that the only real difference amongst HomePlugAV devices that use the same standard is their size and whether they have a pass through electrical jack.

By Bud
I have the previous version of this item that is rated at 200 mbps. It works just as well and I don't constantly loose my internet connection. With this new one I loose the connection for a few seconds on a regular basis.I cannot tell that the item connects any faster than the old 200 mbps version.I would not purchase this item if you already have the older one if you are expecting faster connection speeds or a more stable connection.

Incredible -- I took them out of the box - plugged one in near my router, and the other one upstairs -- solid green light -- took right off. That's it -- plug in the two supplied Cat-5 cables and you're totally installed. I even tested it by plugging in a 5-port switch at the remote end. No problems -- I couldn't see any speed difference -- my laptop was connecting at 1.0Gbps (in network properties). No lag, no errors. I put a Wireless-G Access Point on at the remote end -- working great!!These units are really small - about the size of a small transformer -- plug them in and go!UPDATE: August 8, 2012 - 4 months later- and they're still running strong -- NO issues from these little units! My customer is VERY happy-- much better than the Linksys devices I installed a few years ago.
